Hardline Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile's Incoming President.

After a definitive second-round vote, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.

A Commanding Triumph

With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third presidency, having earlier been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Platform Built On Security and Immigration

Noted for his strong Catholic views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly centered on promises to address rising insecurity and significantly curb migration.

He frequently cited migrants, particularly the around 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an stern warning for them to depart before the inauguration or face deportation.

His proposals included controversial measures such as erecting holding facilities, border walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the military presence on the northern frontier.

Within a Continental Shift

Several commentators see Kast's success as aligning with a larger right-wing shift in Latin America, similar to recent political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Nevertheless, other analysts further frame it as a continuation of the established rotation of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Governing Lacking a Strong Majority

Despite his sweeping popular vote triumph, Kast does not command an absolute majority in the legislature, not in the lower house or the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are grouped together.

This political situation may hinder his policy goals, such as a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.

"There are numerous aspects about how a Kast presidency will look like that are uncertain because he has not said his methods for achieve them," said a political science analyst.

The analyst added, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures associated with the right-wing. However where there is far less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his central theme across the race."
