LA Faces Unprecedented Heat Only One Week Following Severe Winter Weather.
Following a week of heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now seeing unseasonably high temperatures for this time of year.
Record-Setting Temperatures
On Friday midday, the mercury climbed to 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in downtown Los Angeles, according to the National Weather Service. This easily surpasses the old record for this date, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established just last year.
"Very warm conditions" were noted on official charts for the region.
Safety Alerts
Authorities cautioned that Friday's heat posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Never leaving kids or animals unattended in a car.
A Sharp Reversal
This sharp rise in mercury arrives just after a powerful winter storm that pummeled the area recently. That event unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to higher elevations, causing flash flood warnings for millions residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also caused a large avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Looking ahead cooler conditions is coming. The heat were expected to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in central Los Angeles by late Friday.
Additional areas that hit ninety degrees included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Additionally, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were forecast to see the high 80s.
For the weekend, downtown LA can anticipate readings in the eighties, with cooler weather expected for the following week.
