The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
