The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
