New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, was not quick to announce this decision right away following his victory in November.

"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live within me and the work I do," he added.

Political Debate

In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

However his rivals, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.

Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
